Both my trucks are six volt and they work just fine. If I were going to try something, it would probably be going to 8 volts.
The two reasons I see for going to 12 volts with the stock engine is that you live in cold country and the truck sits outside or you drive at night and want better lighting.
If either was the situation for me, I'd just drive the Toyota's.
