My brother and I did one in about 1975. IIRC, we did the seal and replaced bearing cups. I don't remember if we did cones too, but they have to be hard to get to without splitting the case, out of the truck.
Maybe drive the shaft back and forth to remove cones? Just don't let it come out and drop the gear into the bottom?
If you have lock out hubs, a jack leg repair would last lonng times, since the shaft would only turn when hubs are locked.
