I grew up in Elsinore, Calif. It was pure hot in the summertime. We used to go barefoot and had to duck into the storefronts to cool our feet from the sidewalks. When we passed the Ice House, we would sneak around to the door into the area where they kept the ice. It was the coolest place in town. I think they left the door unlocked for the kids.
