It's a small world. My grandmother told me the story as they were in Western Oregon at the time, but she didn't know the people. My understanding is the Japanese were trying to fire-bomb the coastal forests to destroy all the spruce trees, thinking that would prevent us from building airplanes. Fortunately the scheme didn't work.
