Outdoor wood boiler. Used a 500 gallon propane tank. I still have some fine tuning to do and to add a startup bypass and the thermostatic controls on the water side. I have been heating my house successfully for 3 weeks now. Very simple. Got the Taco 007 continuous duty pump and fittings, 16x16 heat exchanger, and a 20 plate exchanger for the domestic hot water from Amazon.com. I think I am around $500 in cost total so far. I plumbed the heat exchanger into my existing furnace plenum just above the AC coil and used a cheap thermostat to jumper over the existing thermostat and run the furnace blower.

A lot of work but well worth it. In 3 weeks I have saved near $120 in propane with this leaky old house. I am also looking at refill times around 10-12 hours. Smoke is not nearly as bad as expected and I keep the damper near shut.

If you want something easier to deal with, Tractor Supply and Orschelns have a furnace that is wood burning but you can install a heat plenum and even hot water to it. Sells for around $900. I have one in my shop without the water coil and there used to be one in the house with the water coil but it was removed due to insurance (we are renting and the insurer would not cover the rental property with a wood burning furnace).
