Maybe it was Cal-Tech? They got to wondering why engineer applicants were dropping from some school districts, and not others. The difference was shop classes. Shop classes are not just early exposure for future tradesmen, but also the budding engineers.

Then too, a couple reverse examples: Pat, with his physics degree, making a fine living as a world renowned furniture maker. And Tom, with a degree in Entomology, who is in construction management. Seems getting a B.S. in Bug Loving qualifies you for a job selling pesticides to farmers.

You want to take a first step to encourage kids? Give an old mechanical typewriter to the budding engineer around the corner. Lots of levers and springs inside, and he might learn to type too. And my grand niece just got gifted my old computer to tear into.
