The repro is rougher, and I suspect more brittle than the original. I bought some repro parts and fabricated the simple parts and I think I was still in it $100. Have never even really used the winch since I rebuilt it, so I can't say I've given it a test. If I just wanted a working winch for emergency use and wasn't going to use it a lot, I think I'd clean up the jaw clutch so it worked smoothly, grease it up, and slide it into engagement by hand if needed. The lever doesn't really give you a lot of mechanical advantage and the clutch dogs are undercut so they stay engaged on their own. The drum brake is theoretically nice, but you can make do without it.
