Parents have to take some responsibility in these unfortunate and preventable accidents. Toy gun makers are painting toy guns rainbow colors in those parts of the gun that are visible to set them apart from the real thing, and any parent that doesn't take there child's toy gun and do that, is a ...... idiot.
Police are being trained to neutralize an active threat as quickly as possible for the safety of others an themselves, so they are not going to tolerate someone ignoring instructions or commands when the office can't determine if the individual has a real or a toy weapon in hand; they want to go home to their families at the end of the day as well.
We train officers to size up a situation, it's a split-second decision for the officer to use deadly force, and we ignore the responsibility of adults to instill responsibility in children. We've become to much of a "blame everyone else but me" society. We see it every day with education, blame the teachers for Johnny and Suzy failing in school while Johnny and Suzy play video games. It's requiring us to continue to lower education standards and the responsibility of parents is a subject elected officials stay away from, they want to remain in office.
