Gasoline was a byproduct of making fuel oil. They used to burn it off as waste.
I'm not sure when the idea came about to use it as a fuel for internal combustion, but after that, diesel became almost a byproduct of refining for gasoline.
Diesel was cheaper than gas until a few years ago, (right after I bought the D350) when demand and a drop in production drove the price up. There are a lot of politics involved. too. I have a feeling that another refinery or two would make all fuels cheaper in this country. Big oil won't build them though, (duh) and blames it on the environmentalists who want to keep the prices up so we'll give up and ride the bus..
