I just happened to run across the following statement on this site:

"1955 - 12 volt electrical system

-Compression ratio boosted to 7.6:1. Among the features of this engine where aluminum alloy pistons, chrome-plated top piston rings, floating oil intake and exhaust valve inserts."

Now, it doesn't say that previous engines didn't have hardened valve seats, but it is pointing out what appear to be the differences on the new for 1955 engine.

I suspect some of the discussion may be around the definition of, "hardened" Certainly, cast iron can be hardened, but I doubt it would reach the hardness of stellite inserts.
