Power Wagons are easy since they are titled to the frame number and the VIN number which are the same. If you change cabs, you just unscrew the VIN plate and put it on the new cab. I doubt that would be considered illegal in most places as long as the frame number is still legible and matches. This is compared to having reproduction or altered VIN plates made with is mostly likely illegal everywhere.

If you change frames, you may have to get a new VIN for the truck. There are procedures in place for getting replacement VIN's. But, there goes the originality, if you care. However, it may affect the price of the truck when you go to sell it.

The key is to get the paperwork squared away first with the matching frame and VIN numbers before you start making changes that would affect the paperwork. Then you have an official paper trail of ownership.

Changing the drive line and accessories doesn't usually affect registration and ownership papers since registration isn't usually based on engine number. But, check your truck first as some states continued to register trucks based on engine number until they were required to use VIN numbers by Federal regulations.

Buying trucks that have missing VIN plates or illegible frame numbers increases the difficulty of registering the truck, and should result in a reduced sales price.
