I dont believe going to PS will solve your immediate problem, though I sure would do it at some point. The PS box is still attached to the frame and must come up to the dash with the column.

All my trucks were born with manual steering and the column came out in the dash notch. When I went to PS, the column still came out in the dash notch.

I wish I could tell you what the problem is your dealing with. I wish you were close where we both could put our eyes on the PW and figure it out. I have this feeling it going to turn out to being something quite simple.
