The tube picks up raw gas from the bowl of the carb. The heater should have another connection that goes to the vacuum side of the intake manifold. Basically the vacuum from the engine draws fuel from the carb pulls it through the heater atomizes it and a electric heating coil inside the heater ignites the atomized gas. The exhaust gas is returned to the intake manifold. It gives you instant heat. They are safe if used correctly and the heater is in proper shape. Make sure your heating coil works. If it's 6 volt don't hook it up to 12 volt or it will burn out the heating element.
