I measured the play - my original "1 inch" was a bit exaggerated (1" would mean they come apart). Mine were 0, 1/8, 5/8, 5/8. Where the 5/8 seem to just be hanging on - infact one of them fell apart was I was playing with it.
Funny that the ones which look the nicest in terms of oil seal wear were the 5/8 ones. They were also both short-shafts.
I look into upping my balls someday, perhaps.
