The back of radiator to firewall distance is 31". Except for small Japanese sixes like Nissan 3-3-3.5L etc. sixes are too long. A guy did put a 6BT in a M37 but he moved the radiator in front of the grille!
A large bay could be put into the firewall for a few inches room.
Was the "mechanic" referring to Mercedes automotible engines like the 2.4L 4 cyl of the 240D or the 3.0L 5 of the 300D, or the OM364 4cyl which is 3.97L and quite similar to a 4BT or a 4.236 Perkins. Toyota Brasil ran them in OJ50-55 Bandeirantes for quite a few years till they switched to the Toyota 14B which has 600 more rpm, 300 less cc, and a lot less vibration.
