Here is how it's done. hold a piece of aluminum plate over the back of the hole it will conduct heat away from the sheet metal and keep it from going liquid. It also provides a smooth surface to stop weld material from sticking out on the back side of the weld. Also steel weld material will not stick to the aluminum so after you are done just hit the piece of aluminum with a hammer and it will fall off. If the hole is less than 1/2" just fill in with the welder wire and grind smooth, if the hole is larger it is best to cut a sheet metal fill piece. We use a millermatic 250 turned way down and have no problem welding sheetmetal a lot thinner than you find on a dodge truck.
