Early cars and trucks used simple fenders which had little or no compound curves. Like Model T fenders. During the 1930's, the big rounded 'aerodynamic' fenders came out. These were quite fragile for combat use, took longer to make, and used more material. So, among other companies, Dodge reverted to the non-compound curve fenders in 1941 on the 1/2 ton WC trucks, and continued them on the WWII 3/4 ton WC trucks, then postwar on the Power Wagons and the M37 family. I don't know when the term Flatfenders came into use, but it is a reasonable descr1ption of these non-compound curve fenders.
