I looked at a ’78 Ford Van to which someone adapted a 4 cyl. Cummins and 5 speed manual transmission. The motor started and seemed to run fine. The transmission is locked up. The van is total junk. He’s asking $2500. I’m interested in putting this in my Power Wagon and could use some advice on what I’m actually looking at. The seller is the tow truck driver who hauled it off the Interstate a year or so ago. He said he drove it around the yard a little before the tranny locked up. He thinks it’s just the shiftng fork. Unfortunately, all he can tell me about the rig is that it was built by an “engineering” company in Kansas City, and that the bellhousing adapter is GM.

I’ve posted photos at http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1686686&a=12967248

Can anybody identify this transmission? It doesn’t appear to be PTO friendly, so I wouldn’t want it in my PW, but I’d like to see if it could be repaired so the van could be driven a little before the engine swap. What about the bellhousing adapter? What else will it fit? I’m aware adapters are available for a variety of transmissions. I’m wondering if this is one I could use.

What desirable features should one look for in a 4 cyl. Cummins, and how can they be recognized? I was once told the in-line fuel pumps are better for hot-rodding. Then someone told me the rotary pumps are much more common. If I told you the number on the back of the block is 481035102P, does that say anything about this motor? I consider it a plus that it has a power steering pump, alternator and AC compressor already on it. Although, I believe I recall a mix of serpentine and V-belt pulleys.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don
