first letter of engine serial number...meaning?

I saw Bryan's post on serial numbers. My '48 PW has D24-61687 on the engine block. What does the "D" mean? I just bought the vehicle and don't understand the serial numbers on my block. Is this a Dodge motor? Just curious. John
