Hardened valve seats?

Hi guys, this may be common knowledge for many of you, but did the 230 flathead 6 come with factory hardened valve seats? I stopped by a local speed shop today, and one of the guys there has a 54 Dodge sedan, and they just got the 230 back from the machine shop. They showed me the hardened valve seats in the block, and I couldn't believe it. They told me they did a '47 Plymouth last year, and same story, it had the hardened valve seats. They told me my '50 PW is very likely the same, and that using a lead substitute in the gas is a complete waste. Is this the case? Thanks for your help!
