Before there was 8-track back in 1957 or 1958, Chrysler had an optional record player. It played a 16 2/3 record that - if I remember correctly - had a large center hole like a 45 rpm disc.
In 1957, I had a 1949 Chrysler New Yorker with a straight 8, fluid drive, and a 6 volt system. I could not afford a new Chrysler, but I could afford a converter from J.C. Whitney. I used it to power my portable 3-speed record player.
The player sat on the back seat. The converter was wired into the trunk. There was a standard 100 vac outlet in the rear package outlet for the player.
I flipped the toggle switch on the dashboard and soon there was carefully chosen mood music. (I was tired of tuning into "our song" on the radio when she and I were not that "our".
Don't ask your grandma how it worked if your grandpa is the in room. She might have been one of those "our" moments.
