Given what it took for the experts here to identify it, it was probably just "scrap" brass to some tweaker, like my batteries, radiators and marine fittings. Kind of a long way back in the boonies for a tweaker, but I guess they're everywhere these days. I did see that the one on ebay sold for $750.

It's weird how there can be some old thing sitting in the woods for 50 years, and I've known about it for a good many years too, and then just when I go back to salvage it, somebody steals it. The same thing happened 30 years ago when my friend and I went up to salvage the Pelton wheel out of Chancellor. I'd seen it there for years, but when we drove in, somebody had taken a chainsaw to the roof timbers of the old power house and torched off the bolts and it was gone. That was before meth, but if the wheel was bronze, as some of them were, it would have been worth plenty even then.
