From the top where the shifter goes into the tower, take a large pair of water-pump pliers or slip joint) place them around the rounded cap then push down and twist it either counter clockwise or clockwise (I cant remember) then it should spring up and the entire shifter will pull up through the top. Then the pressure is off the large spring and it qill come out the top also. Do the reverse to re-install the shifter. This is the same on all pre-1990 new process transmissions regardless of type. Have fun! The spring is stiff!
