I would really soak it in PB Blaster or Kroil for a few hours.
Then as Chris said, try and work the spring out by levering it up over the cast ears in the housing.
One it is out, examine the shaft and remove the small spring and bolt (visible in pic) that goes through the shaft for cleaning.
Also, the little pin that is above the shift tower sits in a rectangular slot in the shaft. Make sure the slot is not worn/wallowed out. I had mine rebuilt by a pro welder because of this.
