First, your referring to two different things.

The cutting and threading you mention is when making up a new push rod that runs from the brake pedal to the Brake Master Cylinder. The brake master cylinders I have used are set up for OEM applications and have a "eye" on the end of the push rod for attaching to the brake pedal. Thats all well and good for a specific application. But when using them in a 'off' application' such as we do, we need to make a adjustable
puch rod from the brake pedal to the brake master. I do this by cutting the original end off (with enough left to thread, remove a proper amount of old rod off the other side
(to allow for a coupler to be added) then thread both ends to 3/8 x18. I get a steel 3/8x18 coupler at the hardware store. Now I can adjust the amount of throw very easy.

I cant give you a exact push rod length. I just measure enough to take out so the 3/8x18 coupler will have a good range of adjustment and call it good.

When this is all done, with the brake pedal foot off, full up. I adjust so I have about 1/16" to 1/8" of free play. This allows the brakes to fully release. Any pressure on the brake master, by not having a tad of free play can cause brake lock up as your experiencing.
