You don't have to drill a big deep hole, maybe just the point of a 1/4" bit. Steel chips are long spirals, cast iron makes dust, malleable makes little chips mixed in with dust.

Other guys use a spark test by taking to a grind stone, but the drill chips are very obvious, little interpretation needed.

My experience on FFPWs is that a lot of the cast parts are malleable.
