did you ever read the book "the quest for longitude"? Its about Harrison and his clocks. His first clocks were wood (circa early 1700s) and one of the is still going in a building in England somewhere. He invented the frictionless motion which allowed the use of wood gears. He was raised as a carpenter and had an excellent understanding of wood and grains. He went on to invent the first accurate time piece which allowed accurate navigation at sea and it really changed the world. Very interesting story. They did make a movie about it that aired on PBS in the 90s.
