Disconnect drive shaft at PTO and try it.
You can take the oil fill plug out and see parts of the (expensive) bronze gear. Look for damaged teeth. If so, look for a good used winch, if you really need/want one.
Winches, for me, are just ornamentation anyway. Although, it's nice to have everything on your truck working as it should.
