I don't know where you're shopping, but Military Surplus Wholesale has new NATO jerry cans for $25 and I paid $10 for 10 plastic vent caps for the CARB-compliant cans. Last week I picked up a regular American jerry can with no rust inside at the flea market for $10, including a spout. I can't imagine paying $50 for any gas can.
