When they put the protective steel unit on my '97 Grand Cherokee last month. Was told by the parts guy that Chrysler was only paying $40 for the hitches and only allowed the dealer 50 minutes labor for the install.

My vehicle was the first one done under the recall program at our little dealership and they had a new special electric heating coil arrangement to warm up rusty nuts and studs to make removal easier before installation of the protective guard. This unit was required by Chrysler to be used by the installer and was the first time the technician had used one.

I fail to see how the company is going to gain any advantage in future litigation for the failure of the guards when used as hitches. Without a weight rating, and being a functional hitch, not needing any modification to be used as such, seems like they are setting themselves up for a class action suit for negligence should they start failing.
