I have both filters on both my trucks and so do many other people. The carb-mounted glass filter came standard on many vehicles. No problems. Just make sure the filter element isn't clogged. I think the extra protection is worthwhile, and I like the looks.

Before you start removing things, find out what the problem is. Does it happen all the time, or only when the truck is warmed up or in hot weather? Even if taking off the extra filter resolved the problem, you don't really know if you've solved the core problem or just band-aided a weak fuel system, if the fuel system is even the problem

Once again, the basic step is to do a fuel pressure and flow test. I would the test down stream of the carb-mounted filter.

Or, just start taking off and changing things. That's what most of us do.
