Good discussion at that link about cutting methods.
Haven't seen a small diameter tap. Whatever you do - don't leave an inside edge on your fix that can catch paper because it will, at the worst possible time. I spent most of five years full time clearing pipes, fixing bad drain work, and cleaning up sewage so I don't have a high opinion of creativity in that area. Maybe I just saw all the bad examples. I think indoor plumbing is nonsense entirely but that's a different conversation. Good luck.
