If you insist on using wire go with the smallest diameter .021 and use straight co2 for your shielding gas. If you don't use easy grind type wire use s-6 for silicon content, it will be much more stable.

The s-6 wire is more money but cuts down the amount of spatter you get and the c02 is much cheaper and will let you weld with a short arc giving you much more control.

Every welding consumables salesman out there will try to set you up the other way for their bottom line and because they usually don't weld.
Now if you had a TIG that would be a diff story.
