I am not sure of the metal thickness comparison but I have found that my M37 has heavy enough sheet metal that I can use 0.030" wire. I use the 75%/25% mix I think it is Argon/Co2 but I may be wrong, it is the standard mild steel mix. I have a miller 210 and even use the number two tap. I am hardly a body man, so I won't say it doesn't warp a little but I do try and do short welds and let the metal cool.

I have a scout which is much, much thinner metal (insert rust joke here) and that works better with 0.024" wire but I still use the #2 tap.

Not sure what welder or if you are welding in a shop but I recently had significant problems welding and found it to be the outlet I was using was too far from the panel and the code minimum wire lost too much voltage. I moved to my shop and the welder welds so much nicer. If you are using extension cords might want to check the wire size.
