Hi all,
The answer to the clunking inside and resultant binding of the steering knuckle was that a significant chunk of metal broke off the universal joint on the axle shaft. One of the "corners" of the flanges of where the the balls run broke and was wedging itself in the rotating assembly in some way. The piece broke off the short section of shaft (the section which drives the drum).
The long axle section has some serious pitting where the oil seal should have been - nothing but a mangled piece of metal in there. So this will probably need to be replace also, prior to any stream crossings...
