Cleaned out the grease and almost cut myself on sharpness of the outer edge of the axle housing. Took off the knuckle flanges and found a mess on the front of the axle. Based on the mis-match of bolts holding the knuckle and steering linkage on and the ends of a couple of these guys, I suspect that one or more of the bolts was too long and was scraping on the housing as the the wheel was turned. Over time gouging, mashing and otherwise tearing the thing up. Phooey!

There is also a sharks tooth size chunk of metal, which was probably the thing that I could hear clunking around (image link somewhere below). There are some more images of the mess (which isn't terribly photogenic), if anyone wants to have a look and provide thoughts:

I am assuming there is not supposed to be a 3/16" groove warn in the lower part.

I suspect that I am going to be in the market for a new front axle.

Argh!
