I figure the "valve" advice was a pretty good test in principle. The fact that it puffs out with very slight constriction of the plug hole has to be a major clue.
I'm keen on the fuel theory at the moment. It is the area where I've given the least attention over this order - mostly wires, timing, wires, etc.
