Electrical Question

Greetings.

A quick question regarding electrical conversion (AC to DC)....

I have an old Super Beacon Ray light taken off my 1963 (12 volt system) FF Power Wagon fire truck. My plan is to keep the light in the house, powered from a AC to DC (3 amp) converter which I purchased today at Radio Shack., I've seen this done by others.

I powered up the converter and attached the hot wire to the light. I then touched the negative wire to the light's base. Nothing happened... To test the converter I tested the wires on a turn signal bulb and it lit brightly.

Am I using wires that are too light a grade for the Beacon Ray application? Am I incorrectly connecting the wires to the light?

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Photos of similar wiring would be appreciated.
