These days, stumps are called "root wads" and "large woody debris", and they're in real demand for environmental remediation projects and what they call "engineered wetlands". It always seemed like a neat racket for the loggers who could get stumps for free and sell them to the greenies.

Of course the irony is that if you were to go and toss that stump in the lake, you'd have a whole alphabet soup of federal agencies down on you like a ton of bricks, but if the EPA or the Corps of Engineers or somebody decided they needed to build an "engineered wetland" on the shore of the lake somewhere, probably as a result of some legal settlement about dams or highways, they'd buy truckloads of "LWD"s like that and have excavators carefully place them on the lake shore exactly where some earnest young environmental architect sitting at a cubical in some distant city determined each one should go in order to restore the ecosystem for the "anadromous species" (fish) and "cavity excavators" (woodpeckers).

I've read their studies, plans, and reports, and the first thing I learned is everything in their world is called something different from what normal people call it.
