I work a forge and own a small propane one. There is a lot of time involved in heating, bending and forge welding each link of chain, and the quality of the metal is unknown. While these are historic pieces, I would NOT use them...I can get a 20' piece of 40 series chain with grab hooks for under $25 at the discount tool store. Last summer I went through three pieces of chain using them with heavy tractors.

It is nice to miss these old trades, but we would never want to work one for too long and have to live off the income.
