yes the 4.89s work in stock diffs. it was the optional gear ratio. 5.83 is standard. if you know how to do the stock brakes correctly they will stop as good as disk. disk are lower maintenance and probably last a bit longer. conversions are available. I would stay with stock axles and go disk if that is what you prefer. I just love the look of the stock budd five lug and I like the combat wheels as well. upgrade is an overused term IMO. the stock axle assemblies are extremely tough. huge 3 bearing pinion and drop out design is way stronger than any dana 60
