Powerwagon blinkers - dumb question

Gents, on the top of the cab of my Fargo there is a set of flashers/blinkers. I saw another unit in Canada that had the same thing. It is likely that they were setup by the same dealer.

What did people use for front turn signals (blinkers)? I see people mounting them to the fenders or the side of the grill...at least that is what I see when surfing the web. What was the original equipment?
