On a tractor I had "cast iron" I used a pipe tap to go up in size, but on a brass fitting that I chose that would utilize the existing fuel line. I then had almost enough threads to hold it in place so I JB welded the brass fitting in place. After checking the fitting for excess JB I slapped it together and it works till this day. It runs on a fuel pump too.
If the body of the carb is aluminum with enough meat left to tap it out a little bigger, this may work. If it is going to keep you awake at night wondering if it will leak, then I strongly suggest finding another carb top or complete. They made enough of them someone has to have one around.
