Yes, the drum brakes on the FFPW are marginal (as compared to today's vehicles), but so is everything else on the truck. It's a 65 year old truck with 75 year old design.
The brakes are adequate to handle the 35 mph the truck is reasonably capable of and to drive the truck like it was designed to be driven.
You will have your hands full for the next year or so doing the brakes, suspension and everything else you will find you need to do. Forget about disk brakes, bucket seats Flaming River steering columns and driving back and forth to work everyday at 65 mph.
