In my opinion the problem lies in the fact that the clutch sits out in the open, exposed to water, road salt, dirt, etc. and, to complicate this problem, most winches are not used enough to keep them moving properly. After several million of these winches, Braden got onto the LU2 design, which partially protects the clutch from exposure, and provides a little better leverage with it's shifter, but it's harder to clean and lube when it gets stuck.
Encasing the clutch in oil would be a wonderful solution, but this idea is precluded by the need to move the shifter from the outside of the enclosure.
So, everyone, get out and winch something today. Winch your wench off the couch and taker her to the beach. :)
