I have always used 3/8 and used it 100s of times. there is no correct cable its whatever your needs are. I like the 3/8 because I can fit 300 feet on the drum and have had to use it all a few times to get unstuck. twice up at high altitudes where all the trees were to small to use as anchor so had to spool out to a rock one time and an old growth stump another. I have pics of one of the days I was dragging an FJ45 behind me. He got stuck in the first 20 feet of spring snow pack so I was dragging him behind my 49 PW for about 1500 feet when I finally got stuck myself. another time in a massive open field had to spool it out all the way to get to a tree.
