Actually, when I was a little kid, I lived in Oahu. It was a very long trip from there to California on the old propeller driven airliners.
In Hawaii, if we saw some one off, we would wait for at least an hour at the airport after the plane had taken off. It seemed that, as often as not, they would come back with engine problems.
At that time, there was a ship permanently stationed mid-way between Hawaii and California in case a plane had to ditch.
