As was pointed out below. Some people, even in the parts stores, don't know that 6 volt and 12 volt cables are different sizes. Six volt cables are larger. But, because they are getting harder to find and are more expensive, many of them have been replaced with the smaller cables.

On a '48, there are only two cables to deal with. When a motor is hot, it will try to draw more current. If the cables are not in top condition, I would replace them with the correct size cables and clean the terminals. Other than the starter itself, there's not much else to do on an old FFPW.
