brake plate

I broke the spring clip that keeps the shoe held against the brake plate and I was wondering if I can drill out the rivet and just bolt on a new clip, or do I have to buy the brake plate? Regardless, I still need a new clip for the drivers side front brake on my '50 FFPW. Thanks in advance....JET
