I never heard of putting "not for hire" on the truck, but it can't hurt. I did register mine as a farm truck, which cuts gross weight fees by half.

As for weight, my M35 is licensed at 22,000 GVW. The truck empty is 13,000. The "2-1/2" tons is the cargo rating off-road. They're rated 5 tons on the highway, so that makes 23,000. They only issue gross weight in 2,000 lb increments and won't license it for more than the rated gross, so rather than licensing at 24,000 I had to drop down to 22,000.

I don't think wearing camo would have kept the trooper from stopping me. I think it was the pony-tail and beard that made me not look "like an army guy". But one possibly-useful feature of a stock-looking deuce is that military vehicles are not required to stop at weigh stations.
